For Those of Us Who Won't Be Zooming This Passover

For those of us who most likely won't be Zooming this year, here are some other options.

  • Pre-recorded Seder Segments. Ask members of the family who are not going to be present to record their part of the seder in advance. It can be shared during the seder. Alternatively, they can be Zoomed or Skyped in for their segment.
  • Remembrance of Passovers Past. Ask young members of the family to interview older and/or physically distant relatives about Passover when they were younger. Alternatively, families can request a letter / podcast / video in which a relative details their experiences. Stories can be shared during the seder.
  • In Every Generation. Many older relatives have endured extraordinary circumstances  in their past that affected their seder or Passover experience. Ask them to share what it was like via Zoom, or a video or voice recording, or in writing.
  • Pick a Theme. Families can focus on one or more themes from the seder to guide their evening. Each family member can prepare and exchange ideas on the theme before or during seder night.
  • Seder Care Packages. There is still time for families to assemble kits with matzah, wine, maror, etc. for shipment with a card to people who cannot attend. Specially made handicrafts -- such as decorated seder plates, plague bags, and name cards for the seder -- make the care package even nicer.
  • Matzah-grams. Prepare a daily gift for distant or elderly relatives is to prepare brief letters, podcasts, or recordings, and/or small (non-meltable) gifts which the family can send each day of the festival.
